Change is easier than you think, and doesn’t require drastic measures.  Meaning: you don’t need to color your blonde hair dark brown to satisfy that craving for something new and exciting to look at everyday.  Adding in a few streaks of color, or weaving in some subtle light or dark tones really give the feeling of turning over a new leaf without leaving you in an identity crisis.  Right now, my hair is pretty light; you could call me a blonde,  But its been blonde for quite a while now and I’m just ready for something new.  I’m not ready to be my natural medium brown yet, so I am going to gradually go less and less blonde by weaving in golden light brown every time I get my roots touched up.  That way, every 4 or 5 weeks as I get my roots done, it will be a new subtle change that wont shock everyone I know, myself included.

Lately, I have been doing a lot of Japanese hair straightenings.  There has been a real shift in  thinking about hair health lately.  Women are tired of sacrificing the health and beauty of their hair to obtain a certain look.  I have been hearing from a ton of women that they are sick of frying their hair everyday with their flat-irons and blowdryers.  They want to find a gentler way to get the look they want, on the long term.  Japanese straightening has been around for a while now, and women are coming around to the idea that this is a gentle treatment that gives you the straight hair you want,without all the damage, loss of shine and breakage.  I am happy to see this trend toward health, and the realization that Japanese straightening can actually benefit your hair on the long term.

Most hair loss is genetic, meaning, you are just going to lose it, and you can’t do a damn thing about it ( male pattern baldness). But sometimes there are other reasons.   For the most part, your hair, skin, and nails all reflect whats going on inside our bodies, and if there is something wrong or traumatic going on,  you might experience hair loss.  There are many reasons: stress, illness, chemotherapy, medication, giving birth, too much vitamin k, infection, hormone imbalance…etc.  I had an experience with a male client that was rare but interesting: he always had think, full amazing hair, and one day as I was doing my usual cut on him, I noticed a completely bald patch the diameter of a quarter on his scalp that was never there before. He was completely unaware of it when I showed him, and he of course, was alarmed.  I told him to see a doctor after assuring him that frequent hat wearing would not have caused that.  Two days later he thanked me because he had seen the doctor and found out that the hair loss was due to an untreated tooth infection.  Who knew?!  So I guess the moral to that story is to see your hairstylist and dentist often.

Really, what is most often mistaken for hair loss is breakage. A lot of women abuse the flat iron or change hair colors too often, and end up making their hair too brittle and it simply breaks off, making them think they are experiencing thinning hair.  To that I say, be good to your hair and it will be good to you.  Don’t demand your stylist take you from dark to light to dark and back to light again unless you want a pixie cut.  Please don’t flat iron your hair every single day. And for the love, please, please don’t rip through your hair with that brush!  Use a leave in conditioner every time you wash and condition your hair. Yes, shampoo, condition, then leave in conditioner. No, it won’t weigh your hair down.  I promise.
